App Maintenance Cost in India Line by Line 1 2

On 1 November 2025, Google Play began blocking updates to any app targeting Android 15 or higher that ships native libraries not aligned for 16 KB memory pages. On 28 April 2026, Apple stopped accepting uploads built with anything older than Xcode 26 and the iOS 26 SDK. On 31 August 2026, Google Play required new updates to target Android 16. On 1 September 2026, Firebase started charging for Remote Config fetches.

Four deadlines in ten months, and not one of them added a feature a user asked for. That is what app maintenance cost in India actually covers. Some of it is set by Apple and Google, some by whichever APIs your app calls, and only the remainder by your development partner.

Quick answer

  • Apple charges 99 USD a year. Google Play charges 25 USD once.
  • Three or four forced rebuilds a year, on Apple’s and Google’s timetables.
  • For delivery and GPS tracking apps, Maps calls are the largest recurring bill.
  • An India billing account cuts that Maps bill by roughly six times.
  • Telemedicine adds retention and residency costs. Ecommerce adds payment rework.
  • Crashlytics, analytics and push notifications cost nothing at any scale.
  • The rest is engineering hours, priced by your partner.

What goes into app maintenance cost in India?

Split the bill by who sets the price. It turns the conversation from “why is this so much” into “which of these can we move”.

What does a delivery or GPS tracking app cost to run each month?

Take a food or grocery delivery app doing 3,000 orders a day in India. That is 90,000 orders a month. Live rider tracking is on. Here is the Maps bill, worked out from Google’s published price sheets.

Assumptions, so you can change them.

Each order triggers one Geocoding call when the address is resolved, one Routes call to plan the rider’s trip, and two Dynamic Maps loads because the customer opens the tracking screen twice on average. Monthly that is 90,000 geocodes, 90,000 route computations and 180,000 map loads. If your customers check tracking five times per order, multiply the map loads accordingly.

On Google’s global price sheet.

Maps Platform bills per 1,000 events with volume tiers, and Google aggregates usage across every project on the billing account to work out which tier applies.

SKUMonthly eventsCalculationCost
Dynamic Maps180,00010,000 free, 90,000 at 7.00 USD, 80,000 at 5.60 USD1,078.00 USD
Geocoding90,00010,000 free, 80,000 at 5.00 USD400.00 USD
Routes, Compute Routes Essentials90,00010,000 free, 80,000 at 5.00 USD400.00 USD
Total1,878.00 USD

On Google’s India price sheet. Google publishes a separate price list for accounts eligible for India pricing, with larger free caps and lower rates on the same SKUs.

SKUMonthly eventsCalculationCost
Dynamic Maps (India)180,00070,000 free, 110,000 at 2.10 USD231.00 USD
Geocoding (India)90,00070,000 free, 20,000 at 1.50 USD30.00 USD
Routes, Compute Routes Essentials (India)90,00070,000 free, 20,000 at 1.50 USD30.00 USD
Total291.00 USD

Same app, same traffic, same code. About 1,878 USD a month against about 291 USD. Over a year that gap is roughly 19,000 USD.

The India figures are computed at first-tier rates throughout, so treat 291 USD as a ceiling rather than an estimate. Volume discounts apply on both sheets as usage climbs, which pulls the India number down further at this volume and narrows the per-unit gap only at very large scale. Check your own tier on the current price lists before budgeting.

Bar chart comparing monthly Google Maps Platform costs for a delivery app on global pricing, 1,878 US dollars, against India pricing, 291 US dollars.

What this bill does not include, because those parts are free.

Firebase Crashlytics, Cloud Messaging, Google Analytics, Performance Monitoring, A/B Testing and App Distribution carry no charge on either Firebase plan. Teams routinely budget for crash reporting and monitoring that they are never invoiced for.

Where the same app quietly overspends instead.

Write every rider location ping to Firestore and the arithmetic turns nasty. Firestore’s free quota is 20,000 document writes a day. A rider on a 30 minute trip pinging every 10 seconds produces 180 writes, so 3,000 orders a day is about 540,000 writes, roughly 27 times the free quota, every day, before a single order record is saved. Realtime Database is the other trap: storage is free to 1 GB then 5 USD per GB, and downloads are free to 360 MB a day then 1 USD per GB, which a continuous location stream reaches quickly.

Bar chart showing 540,000 daily Firestore writes from rider location pings against a free quota of 20,000 writes a day.

New this month: Firebase began charging for Remote Config fetch requests on 1 September 2026. The first 100,000 fetches per project per day remain free, then 0.06 USD per 10,000 up to ten million a day. An app fetching config on every cold start at scale now has a line item where it previously had none.

What do Apple and Google force you to rebuild every year?

Four separate requirements, on four separate clocks.

Android target API level.

From 31 August 2026, new apps and updates must target Android 16, API level 36, to be submitted. Existing apps must target Android 15, API level 35, or higher to stay available to new users on devices running a newer version than the app targets. An extension to 1 November 2026 was available through the Play Console.

The 16 KB page size requirement.

Since 1 November 2025, new apps and updates targeting Android 15 or above must support 16 KB memory page sizes on 64-bit devices. This one catches teams out because it reaches through your dependencies. If your app uses NDK libraries, directly or inside somebody else’s SDK, it needs rebuilding. Android Gradle Plugin 8.5.1 or higher, NDK r28 or higher, and every prebuilt dependency checked. An app written entirely in Kotlin or Java with no native code is unaffected. A React Native or Flutter app carrying a PDF viewer, a maps plugin or a payment SDK usually is affected, and the cost is not your code, it is waiting for whoever maintains that library.

Apple’s SDK floor.

From 28 April 2026, uploads to App Store Connect must be built with Xcode 26 or later using an iOS 26, iPadOS 26, tvOS 26, visionOS 26 or watchOS 26 SDK.

Privacy manifests.

Since 1 May 2024, an app adding a third-party SDK from Apple’s list of commonly used SDKs must ship required reasons for each listed API, a privacy manifest, and valid signatures where the SDK is a binary dependency. Apps that fail these are not accepted. This is not a one-time task. Every SDK you add or upgrade afterwards reopens it.

One more item that catches new client accounts rather than agencies. A personal Google Play developer account created after 13 November 2023 must run a closed test with at least 12 testers opted in continuously for 14 days before it can apply for production access. Organisation accounts are exempt. If a client insists on publishing under their own new personal account, add a fortnight to the launch plan.

Dependency diagram showing how unaligned native libraries inside third-party SDKs block a Play Store upload even when the app’s own code is unaffected.

Why does a telemedicine app cost more to maintain?

Three reasons, and none of them are features.

Retention windows are long.

Clinical records are not deleted when a patient stops using the app. Storage that grows and never shrinks is a cost line that only ever goes up, and it compounds quietly for years before anyone looks at the bill.

The regulatory baseline moved.

India notified the Digital Personal Data Protection Rules on 13 November 2025, operationalising the DPDP Act 2023, with an 18 month phased compliance runway. Consent notices, breach notification paths and data principal rights requests have to exist somewhere in the product, and somebody has to keep them working after launch.

Consultation flows break in ways that are hard to test.

A dropped call on a mobile network is not an edge case in India, it is a Tuesday. Reconnection handling, prescription draft persistence and session state recovery need testing on real networks, which is continuing work rather than a one-time QA pass.

If you are scoping a build rather than a support contract, our telemedicine app development page covers what goes into the first version.

What drives ecommerce app maintenance cost in India?

Payments, mostly, and the rules keep moving.

The current item is the Reserve Bank of India’s Authentication Mechanisms for Digital Payment Transactions Directions, 2025, issued on 25 September 2025 and effective from 1 April 2026. Every domestic digital payment now needs two distinct authentication factors, and for transactions that are not card-present at least one factor must be dynamic, meaning unique to that transaction. The directions repeal several earlier card security circulars. A separate provision gives card issuers until 1 October 2026 to validate additional factor authentication on non-recurring cross-border card-not-present transactions where an overseas merchant or acquirer requests it.

The practical effect on an app is that checkout and refund flows get reworked on somebody else’s schedule. Layered on top of card-on-file tokenisation, which already stopped merchants and payment aggregators from storing raw card data, a payments integration is now something you maintain rather than something you ship.

Ecommerce checkout flow diagram highlighting the authentication step affected by India’s 2026 two-factor payment rules.

The rest is volume driven. Catalogue size drives search index and image storage cost. Sale periods concentrate a year of load into a few days, which is where undersized infrastructure gets exposed. A food delivery app or a fish delivery app adds the tracking bill worked out earlier, with cold chain timing making accuracy requirements stricter rather than looser.

For general catalogue commerce without live tracking, our e-commerce apps page covers the build side.

If your delivery or fleet bill has been climbing and nobody can say which line is responsible, send us a month of your Maps Platform usage export. We will tell you which SKU is doing the damage and whether your account qualifies for the India price sheet. No engagement needed for that conversation.

What changes for GCC clients?

The engineering work is similar. The obligations around it are not.

Health data is the sharpest example. The UAE regulates electronic health data under Federal Law No. 2 of 2019, which restricts transferring health data related to services provided in the UAE outside the country, with exceptions set out in Ministerial Resolution No. 51 of 2021. For a telemedicine product the hosting decision is a legal one before it is a technical one, and a cheaper region elsewhere is not available regardless of what it would save.

Saudi Arabia’s Personal Data Protection Law completed its compliance transition in September 2024, and SDAIA’s regulation on transferring personal data outside the Kingdom governs what leaves. Organisations moving personal data out work with contractual safeguards, and larger or continuous transfers of sensitive data need a documented risk assessment.

The budget effect is a recurring compliance line that has nothing to do with code, plus in-country hosting, which is rarely the cheapest option on the table.

Jurisdiction note: UAE and Saudi rules are different instruments with different scopes, and neither is interchangeable with India’s DPDP framework. This section describes published requirements. It is not legal advice. Take the specific question to counsel in that jurisdiction.

What changes for African clients?

One item is a genuine annual cost rather than a setup task.

Nigeria’s Data Protection Act 2023 established the Nigeria Data Protection Commission. Data controllers and processors of major importance file an annual Compliance Audit Return, and the filing goes through a Data Protection Compliance Organisation licensed by the Commission rather than being filed directly. That is an annual external engagement on a fixed calendar, and it belongs in the maintenance budget from year one.

The second driver is network reality. An app built and tested on urban 4G behaves differently across networks in Lagos or Accra, and the offline handling work that follows is maintenance, not a feature. Retry logic, queued writes and conflict resolution on reconnect all carry ongoing cost.

What changes if you distribute in the EU?

This one is about to change, so check the date on anything else you read about it.

Apple announced revised EU business terms on 18 August 2026, effective 1 October 2026. The per-install Core Technology Fee, which charged 0.50 euro per install or annual update once an app passed one million EU downloads in twelve months, is replaced by the Core Technology Commission, a flat 5 percent on digital transactions in apps distributed outside the App Store. App Store commission on in-app purchases drops to 26 percent, and to 15 percent for developers in the Small Business Program, the Mini Apps Partner Program, the Video Partner Program, and for auto-renewing subscriptions after the first year. Alternative payment processing sits at 20 percent. Notarisation is still required for every alternatively distributed app.

For a high-download, low-revenue app, this is a large change in the right direction, because the charge now tracks revenue rather than installs. These terms apply to EU distribution only. Standard App Store rates elsewhere are unchanged.

Why is India still the better base for this work?

Three reasons that hold up without a salary comparison behind them.

The Maps bill is structurally cheaper.

The worked example above is the argument. Roughly 291 USD a month against roughly 1,878 USD, on identical traffic, decided by which price sheet the billing account sits on. For a tracking or delivery product this is usually the single largest recurring third-party line.

Working hours overlap.

Indian Standard Time is 90 minutes ahead of Gulf Standard Time and 4.5 hours ahead of West Africa Time. A team in Bengaluru or Calicut shares most of a working day with Dubai, Riyadh, Lagos and Accra. Support inside the client’s own business hours does not need a night shift, which is a cost the client would otherwise carry.

Chart comparing working hours in India, the Gulf and West Africa, showing the overlapping window across all three time zones.

Export of services treatment.

Software services supplied from India to a recipient outside India and paid in convertible foreign exchange are generally treated as export of services under the IGST Act 2017 and zero rated, subject to conditions including a Letter of Undertaking. The same service billed domestically carries 18 percent GST. Confirm the treatment with your own accountant, since it depends on meeting every statutory condition rather than on the client simply being abroad.

Common mistakes

Treating maintenance as optional until something breaks.

The deadlines arrive whether or not you have a contract. Skipping a year means catching up on two API level bumps, an SDK floor and a 16 KB rebuild at once.

Budgeting maps as one line.

A tracking app touches several SKUs, each with its own free cap and its own tier ladder. Budget by SKU.

Not checking which Maps price sheet you are on.

This is the cheapest thing on this list to get right and the most expensive to get wrong.

Writing location pings straight to your primary database.

At delivery volumes this is the fastest route to a cloud bill nobody can explain.

Paying for monitoring that is free.

Crashlytics, FCM, Analytics and Performance Monitoring cost nothing. If they appear on a quote, ask why.

Assuming the cheapest region is available

For UAE health data it is not. Check the hosting constraint before pricing the hosting.

Carrying an unmaintained third-party SDK.

One abandoned native dependency turned the 16 KB requirement from a rebuild into a replacement project for a lot of teams. Audit dependencies annually.

FAQ

How much does it cost to maintain an app in India per year?

The fixed third-party floor is small: 99 USD a year for Apple, 25 USD once for Google Play, and nothing for crash reporting or push. Everything above that is driven by API volume and engineering hours. A delivery app at 3,000 orders a day pays more in Maps calls alone than in store fees.

Why do I have to pay for updates when nothing has changed?

Because the platforms change the requirements. Google Play required 16 KB page size support from November 2025 and Android 16 targeting from August 2026. Apple required Xcode 26 builds from April 2026. Your app did not change. The floor underneath it did.

What is the 16 KB page size requirement and does it affect my app?

From 1st November 2025, apps targeting Android 15 or higher must support 16 KB memory pages on 64-bit devices. It affects any app shipping native libraries, including ones inside third-party SDKs. Pure Kotlin or Java apps are unaffected. Flutter and React Native apps usually need dependency updates.

Why is my Google Maps bill so much higher than I budgeted?

Google replaced the pooled 200 USD monthly credit with separate free caps per SKU on 1 March 2025. A tracking app consumes several small allowances in parallel rather than one large one. Check your SKU breakdown, and check whether your billing account qualifies for the India price sheet.

Does a telemedicine app cost more to maintain than an ecommerce app?

Usually yes. Clinical data carries long retention obligations, so storage grows and never shrinks. Consultation flows depend on live network conditions and need continuous real-world testing. Ecommerce has a lower monthly baseline but sharper spikes around sale periods and payment rule changes.

What do the new RBI authentication rules mean for my ecommerce app?

The RBI directions issued on 25 September 2025 took effect on 1 April 2026. Every domestic digital payment needs two distinct authentication factors, at least one dynamic for transactions that are not card-present. In practice that means checkout and refund flows get reworked on the regulator’s schedule, not yours.

Can I host my UAE telemedicine app in India?

UAE Federal Law No. 2 of 2019 restricts transferring health data related to UAE health services outside the country, with exceptions in Ministerial Resolution No. 51 of 2021. The hosting decision needs legal review in the UAE before it becomes an architecture decision. Take it to counsel there.

Do I pay Indian GST if I am a client in Dubai or Lagos?

Software services supplied from India to a recipient outside India and paid in convertible foreign exchange are generally treated as export of services under the IGST Act 2017 and zero rated, subject to statutory conditions. The same service billed domestically carries 18 percent GST. Confirm with your own accountant.
